Prince Somsanith's paintings of temples are of the 42 found in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997 and the capital of Laos from the Lan Xang dynasty in 14th century until 1975.

His paintings embody the work of three generations within his family. His grandfather, Prince Khammanh Vongkotrattana, historian of the royal court, documented the history of the temples. His father, Prince Somsanith Vongkotrattana, photographed them. Prince Somsanith himself painted them. Each painting is accompanied by a manuscript based on his forefathers' writings.

At the heart of Prince Somsanith's style of painting is the rotring pen, which he uses to make countless individual circles and lines to form images. If you have a broadband connection, turn on the magnifier to get a sense of this marvelous body of work.
